Building blocks are usually a trade-off: the ones children love are shrieking primary plastic you'd rather guests didn't see, and the ones that look good on a shelf tend to be the ones children ignore. Soft City is an attempt to stop choosing. It's a proper town-building set — arches, pitched roofs, a chimney, balconies, trees and a little car with wheels that actually roll — rendered in a muted palette of dusty blue, lilac, soft orange and warm grey that looks like part of the room rather than an apology for one.

Around forty pieces come with a baseplate to anchor the build, and the shapes are specific enough to make real architecture: curved arches for doorways, angled roof sections that meet cleanly at the ridge, flat plates for balconies and roads, tiny orange flower studs for window boxes. The blocks are chunky, matte-finished and easy for small hands to press together and pull apart — firm enough that a finished house survives being carried across the room, forgiving enough that a three-year-old doesn't need an adult to separate the pieces. The whole set builds the two-house scene shown, but that's a suggestion rather than an instruction: the same pieces make a tower, a garage, a bridge, or something with no name at all.

Made for ages 3 and up. Early on it's stacking, colour-matching and knocking things down; later it's deliberate building, then storytelling around what's been built, with the car driving between houses and the flowers going in the windows. It rewards being rebuilt rather than finished once and displayed. Wipe with a damp cloth; the pieces store flat in a shallow box or basket, and the baseplate doubles as a tidy-up tray at the end of the day.
